Comments: Market America is a product brokerage and Internet Marketing company that specializes in One-to-One marketing. Through its revolutionary One-to-One Marketing concept, Market America combines the Internet with the power of people. There are 2500 exclusive products in the brokerage division and 3000 Internet Partner Stores accessible from your web portal. The company pays distributors and customers cashback from 2% - 35% for shopping. Distributors earn commission on sales for exclusive products and Internet partner shopping. Market America is creating the economy of the future with their powerful web portal where you can find anything you want or need. They are positioned to be the ultimate Internet shopping destination powered by Microsoft FAST search technology.
- In 2009 debuted at #66 on Internet Retailer’s Top 500 guide
- Market America was ranked 13th in 2008 overall web sales.
- More than 3 million customers
- 180,000 distributors worldwide
- Over $3.1 billion in accumulated retail sales
- To date distributors have earned $2 billion in commissions & retail profit
- Each distributor has a personalized web portal www.marketamerica.com
Part of the qualification to become a distributor includes a selection of product that costs between $500 and $1100 depending on your product choices. The company offers several different product lines such as Health and Nutrition, Motives Cosmetics and Skin Care, Transitions Lifestyle System for Optimal Weight Maintenance, Website development tools, and nutraMetrix-a health care product line specifically for Health Care Providers, Petcare, Autocare, Voitel wireless phone services and many other specialties.
Advantages: Market America is on the cutting edge of Internet technology and is predicted to exceed Amazon with the power of people, comparative shopping, Microsoft FAST search, and cashback paid to customers. A social networking platform, Chatterbox, allows you to update all of your social networking sites from one spot. There are several product lines available for distributors to be able to attract a diverse pool of people with varied skill sets.
The focus of a Market America business is building customer share, finding and serving a limited number of customers. The best results come from guiding customers through their initial online shopping experience. The company analyzes data and locates the best manufacturer, matching products to people and people to products- Built on Product – Powered by People®.
Market America also has their own branded Eco friendly products ( Snap, EcoSolve, AutoWorks, Global Care) that have a higher profit margin. Green is one of the hot topics.
The best results come from personally guiding customers through the often confusing experience of shopping online. The second focus of distributor is to find others that want to provide the same service.
Not For Profits: We like this company for the Not-For-Profit business model supporting 501c3 charitable organizations and schools. Wouldn’t you like your purchases to benefit either of them? NFP organizations have the ability to use their communities to promote online purchase of the products and services. A NFP can be setup as a business at no cost, thus benefiting from the sales volume of their community as well as other businesses’ and team sales volume. The NFP has a website and Market America makes the donation on all shopping.
For a Not-For- Profit they can basically be setup as a business putting them in the flow of other businesses’ volume. This allows the volume to follow through the NFP allowing the NFT to be given a donation. The NFP can not have its own website unless it sets itself up as a regular business paying the regular setup fee. The Not-For-Profit only collects volume from Market America products – NOT from the Partner stores.
Disadvantages: Multiple opportunities for specialization within the company (health and nutrition, weight management, website development sales, etc.) might confuse new distributors. Leadership recommends that new distributors first focus on the top 10 selling items to learn the business before they consider specializing in one of the product lines.
Staying in contact with your customer base is a must. Depending on the product or service you may need to move a great deal of product to make significant money. This is a highly competitive area with the benefit being personal touch.
In 1999, James Ridinger was found to be at fault in setting up stock for Market America and distributing unregistered shares, you will find this information at http://www.sec.gov/litigation/litreleases/lr16131a.htm. Mr. Ridinger admits to trusting the wrong advisors and made good on his error to the cost of a $30 million dollar buy back of all outstanding stock and taking the company private again. All good companies start and fall on leadership. This issue seems to have been a matter of choosing the wrong counsel and a bad decision. The issue was resolved and the company continues to grow as a result of the executive teams’ dedication to the company, forward thinking and innovative technology. The same Executive Team is still in place today. This brings me to a very important point; interview the leadership and the team leaders. Complete your due diligence. A team that is focused on building a business through selling products to retail customers AND recruiting new distributors will be successful, ask for the Annual Report.
Market America publishes an Annual Report and encourages the annual report be shown to those interested in the business to illustrate where the sales are coming from, the growth of the company and the investments being made back into the company. We have found a ratio of 10 customers to every franchisor seems to be a good start.
In many cases these opportunities can be abused but in more cases they are great opportunities. The income of the distributors at the top and to the corporations that sponsor them can come solely from the new "investors" at the bottom. Be careful that most of the sales are made not made through the new distributors who are hoping to “invest” in their new business that will one day make them millions.
There have been a few legal issues with Market America and some of its distributors because they tried to "look into" other opportunities. This opportunity doesn’t allow the use of the Power of Three. It is interesting that they and other companies like them call you independent but try to limit your options so that one wrong move and they'll stop all your checks from coming. If you are going to focus on this opportunity and no others – this is not an issue. Most Personal Franchises don’t inforce this rule if you aren’t making over $100,0000 in the business or if your other business is in a non competing product line. Something to keep on your radar.
