The Power of Money and the Passion to Give |

Money is a powerful tool, and a single dollar can save a life of another, , here is a story of how that happened in my life. Three years ago I worked with a phenomenal collection of people with a common goal of wearing out running shoe to cure cancer. We were all training with an organization called Team in Training (TNT) which is a fundraising arm of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society dedicated to curing blood related cancers. I remember at one of our night track sessions a young lady telling us about her experience of being diagnosed and treated for Leukemia and how scared she was having found it on her honeymoon in Hawaii. In her talk, she said something that changed my thinking with fundraising and my world view to some extent. She said, that she wondered at what micro moment the researcher or doctor identified that the anti rejection drug that saved her life was the cure they were seeking? Realizing there was that “ah-ha moment,” that moment cost a dollar that was raised and donated by someone who was driven to save the life of another, maybe it would save their own life in the future. That one dollar and the millions that went before it were critical in the success of saving this one important life and the millions that will come later. Money can be used for good or bad. It is no sin neither it is repulsive to want to make money. Your ethics in raising the money and how you choose to change the world with it usually is the definaing factor in how people perceive you and your money. Money is very powerful as a tool for good, however and often when philanthropists are interviewed, you find no more powerful time in their lives when money meant so much. Putting in clean water in a village where people drank from polluted streams, curing a disease, improving the life of the underserved, making money can be one the most powerful passions when it comes to positively correcting and connecting with the world. During major disasters, great people come forward to offer help and assist communities and while fingers are good to help in these events, dollars are a critical long term solution to solving the after effects when many of the original saviors need to get back to their jobs and lives. Many people have the desire to help others they just don’t have the means. They often can’t get away from their jobs to help in a disaster or they just don’t have the money to right that donation check. If giving and effecting positive change in people’s lives is important to you and gives you that deep level of satisfaction that you get from nothing else that make this is a passion in your life. Create a budget and your own endowment and find a structured plan to help a cause you have a deep belief in. Maybe it’s cancer research, or helping the Red Cross or helping feed a child in an impoverished area. When you become passionate about it, you will find a way and you will be successful in accomplishing that goal. You never know what that extra dollar you give will save the life of another.
