What Is Really Important In Your Life? |

Recently we were sent an email about a friend who had a stroke but quickly found out it was cancer. Wonderful women..and it breaks my heart. We also received news from a friend who was excited to find out she has a new baby on the way.
So what does all this have to do with business? Well, it got me thinking about what is really important in life. All of us work hard in and on our businesses. We spend countless hours away from those we love – even if it’s only because our thoughts are consumed by our business – trying to build something that will support our customers. For me it is to provide them the freedom to do the things they want to do. Often in the early years, we don’t make time to enjoy the same people we are working so hard to support. Gotta do this or do that ....
One of the best things that ever happened to me was hearing someone say in a presentation - When you are there, BE THERE. He found himself while with the family, worrying about work. While at work worrying about how his family was doing. Never feeling content in either. You need to also take time out to be with the people who are the most important to you. And, while you might find it hard to leave your business completely when you're spending time with your family and friends, here are some things that might help you that I learned along the way.
- Write down any of your open thoughts or task you have on your mind 10 minutes before you plan on leaving for work. If you don’t write everything down, your mind will try to hang onto items so you’ll remember them, taking your attention away from the people you want to spend time with.
- Don't pick focus on either of the above before you leave - if important the people who need to get in touch of you know how. If you find that you are always having last minute things to do - Start scheduling your time so that you answer and return phone calls at the same time each day - 10am and 3pm. Do the same with email. You trained them.
- Before you leave your business, clear your mind.
- Keep a piece of paper or small notebook and pen in your car, pocket or purse. When you remember something that you didn’t write down or hear something that would be helpful to your business, don’t push it away. Your mind will try to hang onto it. Write it down and forget it until you have time to do something with it.
- Before you are scheduled to spend time with your family and friends, take a minute to think how grateful you are and how excited you are to be with them.
- If it is hard spending long periods of time away from your business, set a time limit; then devote yourself 100% to these people during that time. There are times to work hard and times to play hard. When the time is up, take your leave without apology. You were there and focused during the time you said you would be. They call that Quality time!
- Working with your spouse or partner can be particularly tricky if you spend all your time together. Every discussion starts to include business, and business events tend to take precedence over anything personal. Help each other by being accountable to each other and work together to find a way to support "away" time.
So far I have been very fortunate! I have had some fantastic mentors in my life, I have a wife that works with me and we enjoy being together all the time. We try every day to take an hour to walk in the hills behind our house - some days we focus on work and some days we focus on us.
Easy to say .. harder to do.. Even now, my boys came in from school and I had to choose to stop what I was doing while writing this article. When I was right in the middle of it...
I hope this summer you had a chance to take time out to be with the people who are most important to you! And if you find that you haven't, I hope you will, starting today.
